Cyberabad and Hyderabad Traffic Police caught nearly 1,000 drunk drivers in special drives, with several recording extremely high BAC levels. Offenders will face court action, fines, social service, or jail. Police warn that fatal accidents under intoxication may attract Section 105 of BNS
Hyderabad: Nothing seems to deter the tipplers – neither the fear of law nor the apprehension of causing harm to others. For them, scores of messages on not mixing drink with driving and increasing instances of accidents and loss of life appear to hardly matter.
The police checks on drunk driving on city roads continue to net several persons driving around after getting heady on their favourite drink. Incidentally, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar, recently sought to equate such persons with terrorists and described drunk driving as an act of terror on the roads.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police, which conducted a special drunk driving enforcement drive over the weekend, apprehended 424 offenders. Those caught included 300 bikers, 18 driving three-wheelers and 99 driving cars.
Those driving under the influence of alochol were checked for their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels and among them, 361 had BAC levels ranging from 35 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml while 43 offenders had BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml and 20 had BAC levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police said all those caught during the checking would be produced before the Court and if anyone is found to be driving in an inebriated condition and causes a fatal accident, such individuals will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Culpable Homicide Not Amounting to Murder). The maximum punishment under this section is 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.
During the last week, a total of 358 drunk driving cases were disposed of in the courts with fines imposed on 304 persons, fines along with social service for 22persons and 32 persons sentenced with a fine with jail.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Traffic Police, during a two-day special drive on November 21 and 22, caught 535 persons driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Of them, 430 were two-wheeler riders, 39 were three-wheeler and 66 were driving four-wheeler and other vehicles.
