Hyderabad: Did voodoo affect the performance of cricketers during the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) IPL clash on Saturday at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium?
Fake complaints alleging black magic and voodoo hampering the cricketers have now gone viral, causing much amusement and evoking a chuckle among fans.
The story started with a video of an SRH fan rotating a lemon and pointing it towards the field when CSK batsman Shivam Dube was ready to face a delivery from SRH bowler Sakib Hussain.
Moments later, Dube was bowled. Though coincidental, the video of the SRH fan went viral on social media, with people making memes.
Seeking to amplify the humour, some fans started circulating a ‘fake letter’ said to be dashed off by the Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan to the BCCI, blaming the conduct of SRH fans during the match.
The fake letter reads: “Throughout the match, our players were repeatedly subjected to disturbing incidents, where certain sections of the audience were seen and reported engaging in black magic, voodoo rituals and other occult practices, intentionally targeting CSK players. Visuals and credible eyewitness accounts shared with us indicate individuals making unusual hand gestures, drawing strange symbols, using black cloth and performing acts that are deeply unsettling and against the spirit of sportsmanship.”
“Soon after these incidents, our players experienced a sudden and unexplained dip in rhythm, poor judgement and an unusual series of dismissals,” it read.
Not left behind, the SRH fans circulated a counter letter, blaming the CSK fans for ‘unfair and superstitious practices affecting the SRH players during the match’.
The fake letter reads: “During the course of the match, our players were subjected to disturbing and unusual behaviour from certain sections of the crowd. Eyewitness accounts and visual indications suggest that such activities were conducted deliberately and created an environment that was mentally unsettling and contrary to the spirit of the game.”
The Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Chennai Super Kings by 10 runs in an IPL match on Saturday.
