Karimnagar: Farmers staged a dharna at Duddenapalli in Saidapur mandal on Saturday, demanding the supply of water to standing crops from the Mid Manair right canal. Farmers, under the aegis of the BRS, staged a protest demonstration and raised slogans demanding that the government supply water by removing silt piled up in the canal.
Speaking on the occasion, they said that water was usually supplied from Duddenapalli to Gujjulapalli through the MMD right canal. Crops in Eklaspur, Venkepally, and Saidapur would also get water. In the Yasangi season, farmers completely depend on canal water. Though water has been released into the canal from MMD, it has not reached their villages due to piled-up silt and garbage.
Every year, the canal used to be cleared in December and water supplied. However, this time, no repair work was taken up even after the completion of January. While a majority of the farmers have already sown crops, some of them are waiting for water. Crops would dry up if water was not supplied in the next one week.
They warned that their agitation would be intensified if the government failed to supply water by clearing the canal in the next one week. Police visited the spot and convinced the agitating farmers to withdraw their protest. BRS mandal president Somarapur Rajaiah, former sarpanch Thatipally Ugender Reddy, and others participated in the dharna.
