Hyderabad: Online shopping portal Flipkart has apologised for a marketing misfire in which it promoted kitchenware on International Women’s Day.
The tweet put by the e-commerce company on March 8, celebrating International Women’s Day 2022 was found misogynistic by many users.
“Dear Customer, This Women’s Day, let’s celebrate You. Get Kitchen Appliances from Rs 299,” read the message. Many users felt that the post promoted nothing but negative stereotypes making women confined to kitchen.

Twitter users called the company out and pointed out that the company’s marketing strategy was offensive in equating women with cooking and kitchens.
“Why not bike spare parts, musical instruments, running shoes, sport gear, why limit to kitchen” wrote a user.
“The women=kitchen capitalism hasn’t gone and it sickens me to my core. It’s 2022 and I don’t know how long we have to wait”, wrote another.
Following the backlash, Flipkart tweeted an apology. “We messed up and we are sorry. We did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments and apologise for the Women’s Day message shared earlier,” it wrote on Twitter.

Nevertheless, Flipkart was just one of several firms whose Women’s Day messages boomeranged. Several more examples were also posted by Twitter users, all of which allegedly promoted gender stereotypes.
