Khammam: CPI’s Telangana Rythu Sangham has demanded that the irrigation officials take immediate steps to release water to crops in NSP ayacut in the district.
The leaders and cadres of the sangham took out a protest rally to the irrigation office at NSP camp area here on Friday and staged a dharna. The sangham state president B Hemanth Rao complained that the State government’s negligence in repairing breached NSP canal has turned a bane for the farmers.
It was sad that even after 20 days since the canal breached the irrigation officials could not repair it and release water to the farm fields. Despite the availability of modern technology, repairs were delayed and the paddy fields developed cracks due to lack of water, he said.
Around 2.5 lakh acres of land was being cultivated in 16 mandals under the ayacut. Farmers have invested Rs 30, 000 to Rs 40, 000 so far. Due to lack of water paddy crop was damaged at many places and the government should give compensation to farmers whose paddy fields withered.
Because of the recent rains and flash floods crops in 1.25 lakh acres were damaged and the government has not compensated the farmers properly. Officials should release 3000 cusecs water from Palair balancing reservoir into the NSP left canal and ensure that lands at tail end receive water, Hemanth Rao demanded.
NSP executive engineer Babu Rao told the protestors that water would be released from Saturday onwards and admitted that there was a delay in repairing the canal due to several reasons. Release of water would depend on the condition of the canal, he added.
CPI leaders P Prasad, Md. Moulana, J Jithender Reddy, the sagham leaders D Ramesh and K Govinda Rao and others were present.
