Hyderabad: Former MLA Gongidi Sunitha alleged that crimes against children and women were increasing in Telangana and questioned the State government’s handling of law and order. She pointed out that while POCSO cases account for about six per cent of such crimes nationally, Telangana alone accounts for 16 per cent.
Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, Sunitha questioned the functioning of the Home Department, which is headed by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. She cited the lack of a comprehensive review of the State’s law and order situation and alleged that there was no visible action by SHE Teams, Bharosa Centres and the police, which functioned effectively under the previous BRS government.
The former BRS MLA said that in a case involving a Congress sarpanch allegedly attacking a girl child, the police had attempted a settlement instead of taking strict action. Referring to the recent Khammam incident, she welcomed Minister D Seethakka’s visit to the victim and the financial assistance extended, but sought clarity on the government’s strategy to curb crimes against children.
Sunitha also criticised the handling of the Bandi Bageerath case, alleging that stronger charges were added only after public protests. She demanded stringent action against offenders and questioned whether laws were being applied equally to influential individuals and ordinary citizens.
