Kothagudem: The State and Central governments have been making efforts to protect the rights of girls in the country, said the first additional junior civil judge K Deepa. Various programmes have been taken up to raise awareness about the rights of girls, on the importance of girl’s education, their health and nutrition, and social development. Equal opportunities were being given to girls to stand up for India, she said.
Deepa addressed a legal awareness camp here on Monday marking the National Girl Child Day, celebrated in India every year on January 24 with an objective of spreading awareness among the public about the rights of girls in India. She said girls spread joy in their families and it was a great pleasure to celebrate National Girl Child Day. Everyone in the society needs to acknowledge the importance of the day and strive to protect the rights of girls.
Kothagudem Bar Association president Lakkineni Satyanarayana stated that the National Girl Child Day was initiated by the union Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008 for creating awareness and to educate people about girl’s education. The main focus was on changing society’s outlook towards girls, to provide equal opportunities to the girls, decrease female feticide to make their living better and educate masses about the decreasing sex ratio, he said.
Satyanarayana lamented that even after 75 years after independence, girls were still being discriminated against. He called on parents of girls to make use of welfare schemes being implemented by State and Central governments for the progress of their children. He aspired that women in all walks of life should enjoy complete freedom, stand on their own and grow financially to bring about change in society.
