Hyderabad: Forest Survey of India, a Central government organisation, has said that there was a 3.67 per cent increase in green cover in Telangana since formation of the State. “This is the success of Haritha Haram programme,” Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan said on Monday. The Union government has also announced that Telangana State was in the forefront and topped the country in tree plantation and in increasing green cover all over the State, she said.
The State government has been implementing ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’ every year with the objective of reviving forests and increase green cover to 33 per cent in the State. “Before State formation, forest cover in Telangana had declined and forestlands were encroached. The green cover in urban and rural areas was also steadily sliding,” she said, adding that the State government’s stringent measures helped in controlling the felling of tress to a large extent and top priority was given to increasing forest cover.
Plant nurseries were set up across the State enabling people to get the saplings of their choice for free. More importantly, it is now mandatory for village panchayats and municipalities to allocate and spend 10 per cent of their funds on increasing greenery. This resulted in increase of green cover in the villages, towns, along the roadways and in open places, she said.
Development of Roads
Hyderabad: Road network across Telangana had increased considerably after formation of the State, bridging rural and urban connectivity, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said. To strengthen the road network, the government has implemented a comprehensive policy to lay four lane roads from district headquarters to the State capital, two-lane roads from mandal centers to the district headquarters and road for every village. This policy is being implemented strictly and the change is evident, the Governor said.
At the time of State formation, under Roads and Buildings, the four-lane road network was 669 kms and it is now increased to 1,029 kms. Double lane road length network was increased from 6,093 kms to 13,273 kms now subsequently single-lane road network was reduced from 17,483 kms to 13,785 kms. Bridges number is also increased from 2,893 to 3,323 and Panchayat Raj roads length also increased from 64,044 kms to 69,844 kms, she said.
Regional Ring Road realised
Soundararajan said the State government proposed the Regional Ring Road (RRR) project to ensure better transportation facility in the districts and enhance road connectivity with Hyderabad. “The Central government gave its nod for the 348-km RRR which passes through Sangareddy, Narsapur, Toopran, Choutuppal, and Shadnagar in a circular way, 30 km away from the Outer Ring Road. I am sharing the information that the government is very keen and committed to complete the land acquisition and start works on the RRR at the earliest,” said the Governor.
