Karimnagar: Senior Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao on Sunday alleged that the BJP-led Union government was conspiring to erase the name of Mahatma Gandhi from the country.

Addressing a protest organised by the district Congress committee at Gandhi Chowk here, Hanumantha Rao said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was afraid of its political future if the name of Gandhi continued to resonate among the people. He alleged that this fear was driving attempts to remove the Father of the Nation’s name from public discourse.

The protest was held against the Union government’s decision to change the name of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. Hanumantha Rao described it as ridiculous on the part of the BJP government to rename the rural employment scheme as Viksit Bharat by removing Gandhi’s name. He also found fault with the Union government for, as he put it, doing politics in the name of religion.
