Hyderabad: BRS deputy floor leader T Harish Rao called upon young law graduates to uphold constitutional values and defend the rights of the oppressed. He also sought youth participation in politics, and stressed the need for a new generation to shape the nation’s future.
Addressing the valedictory ceremony of “DUCIMUS – WE LEAD” of Osmania University Law College at Tagore Auditorium on Thursday, Harish Rao appreciated students pursuing their law degree at a time when most youth gravitate towards engineering and medicine.
He said lawyers have historically led major movements, from India’s freedom struggle to the Telangana statehood agitation, and remained central to the pursuit of justice.
Recalling the role of Osmania University in the Telangana movement, he paid tribute to student martyrs and underlined the responsibility of the younger generation to protect the State’s legacy.
Harish Rao said justice continues to elude the poor, with over five crore backlog cases pending across the country. He urged the law graduates to become the voice of the marginalised and stand firm when governments attempt to suppress dissent.
Raising concerns over recent legislative developments, he criticised the proposed Hate Speech Bill, calling it a move to curb freedom of expression.
