Hyderabad: The two palatial heritage structures in the south of the city, the Deodi Iqbal-ud-Dowla and Deodi Khursheed-Jah, in recent times, have become star attractions for scores of tourists. Thanks, largely to video bloggers (vloggers) from Hyderabad who have been sharing information about the imposing heritage structures on various social media platforms.
The majestic buildings are located in Shahgunj, just a stone’s throw away from the Chowmohalla Palace in the Old City, and date back to the Nizam era. The Paigah royals built the Khursheed-Jah Deodi and Iqbal-ud-Dowlah Deodi along with other palatial houses in the city.
“Artisans from European countries completed the structure. The construction itself speaks about the money, time and labour that went into finalising the designs and its grounding,” says Anuradha Reddy, member of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
The Deodi Khursheed-Jah, built by ancestors of Nawab Khursheed Jah Bahadur, was once upon a time a beautiful building with a big veranda and its large rooms were furbished with expensive carpets and exclusive chandeliers. A big garden was part of the deodi where an imported star-shaped fountain was installed.
The two-storied building has multi-coloured floor tiles. As one steps into the hall, wooden stairs takes one to the second floor which is supported by 12 pillars of about 40 feet in height. Although it is in a neglected state now, the building continues to attract youngsters who are visiting the place to make short videos for posting on social media platforms.
Mohd Nisar, a post-graduation student from Sanathnagar, who regularly visits the place says, “It is one of the marvellous heritage structures of the city. Despite being in a neglected state it is the best place to take videos because of the royal look of the building.”
A few yards away from the building stands the Deodi Iqbal-ud-Dowla, located on the main thoroughfare. The building was constructed alongside the Khursheed-Jah Deodi. Nevertheless, over a period of time, encroachments had come up inside. A few years ago, the ceiling collapsed due to rains damaging the interiors.
“Looking from inside of these structures, one can imagine the huge efforts that might have gone into the construction during those days,” points out Syed Nawazuddin, a local resident.
When contacted, Charminar MLA, Mohd Mumtaz Khan said that they have taken up the issue of renovating the structures with concerned authorities and recently wild vegetation were removed from the buildings.
