Hyderabad: Doctors at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar performed a brain surgery on 3-year-old child Grace, who was admitted with a rare developmental disorder known as Gelastic seizures, a medical condition manifested by frequent attacks of inappropriate laughter resulting from seizure activity.
Such seizures are rare and occur in only one in every 2, 00, 000 children. After admission, a team of neurosurgeons, neuro-physicians, pediatrics and endocrinologists evaluated the medical condition of Grace.
Later, MRI tests revealed ‘Tumour extending from hypothalamus in the brain with compression on major vessels and nerves related to vision and extra ocular movements. Endocrinologists diagnosed the child to have reached puberty stage, corresponding to 8 years of age, doctors said.
“We did a craniotomy on the child to remove the tumor using navigation under general anesthesia. We ensured major brain structures especially nerves responsible for vision, extra ocular movements and vessels are not disturbed. Post-surgery the frequency of seizures has significantly come down,” Dr. S Ramesh, minimal access brain and spine surgeon, Kamineni Hospitals, said.
The most common areas of the brain which give rise to Gelastic seizures are the hypothalamus that regulates the pituitary gland. A common cause of Gelastic epilepsy is a tumour in the hypothalamus and a majority of such tumors are benign, Dr Ramesh added.
