Hyderabad: The prestigious Koti Women’s College in the city is all set to become Telangana’s first Women’s University.
Education Minister, P Sabitha Indra Reddy who held meeting with education department on Tuesday, directed the officials to prepare proposals for upgrading the college into university.
At present the University College for Women, Koti, being operated as the Osmania University’s constituent college, has the University Grants Commission’s autonomous status and National Assessment and Accreditation Council grade as well.
Considering all these factors, the State government felt that Koti Women’s College has the eligibility to be upgraded into Women’s University, she said. As per the instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, measures should be expedited for upgrading the college into a university, she instructed officials.
“In wake of proposal for upgrading the Koti Women’s College into university, a detailed report has to be submitted on infrastructure, student accommodation and other basic amenities and requirements,” the Minister said. The officials were also directed to constitute an internal committee for preparing necessary guidelines for upgradation of the college besides requisite permissions.
Sabitha Indra Reddy specifically instructed officials to offer specialized courses in the proposed university and accordingly submit details to the government.
Presently, 4,159 students were pursuing higher education in the college and the number could increase further if it was upgraded into the university, she said. while calling for necessary arrangements. “Koti Women’s College has a rich history and upgrading into university would pave the way for further quality education for women in the State,” she said.
‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ begins in four schools as pilot
Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy said four schools in the State were identified for effective implementation of ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ under pilot project.
Accordingly, construction in primary and high schools in Shivarampally and Jillelaguda in Ranga Reddy district, and Aliya and Mahbubia (girls) schools in Hyderabad was being taken with Rs.3.57 crore, she said, adding that already 40 per cent of the works were completed.
These school buildings with all infrastructure would be models for other schools in the State. Construction of compound walls, repairs to classrooms and construction of additional classrooms were under progress.
To improve infrastructure and strengthen the government schools across the State, the State Cabinet has decided to take up the ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ as a flagship programme with a budget of Rs 7,289.54 crore in three phases over a period of three years.
A total 19.84 lakh students in 26,065 government schools will benefit from the programme, where it will be launched in 35 per cent (9,123) of total schools covering 65 per cent (around 13 lakh) of students in the first phase during the current academic year of 2021-22.
