Hyderabad Water Board mandates silt chambers for multi-story buildings

During its 90-day sewerage special drive, the board identified insoluble waste from drainage pipelines as a key factor obstructing sewage flow. In a press release on Saturday, the water board explained that in multi-story building complexes, sewage first enters a silt chamber where solids are retained, allowing only wastewater to flow into the pipeline. This process prevents blockages and ensures smooth sewage flow.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, the water board said the sewage generated in a multi-storied building complex first enters the silt chamber and with solids staying there, only the waste water enters the pipeline. This ensures there are is obstruction to the flow of sewage in the drainage.

For this, a decision has been taken to make silt chambers mandatory for sewerage connections of multi-storied and commercial buildings where sewage is generated in excess, the press release said.

The water board plans to crack down on users of multi-storied buildings if they do not construct silt chambers for sewage connections. It has identified that a large amount of insoluble food waste, plastic bottles, coconut shells, clothes, napkins, and other plastic products in manholes, mainly in the sewage pipe lines of commercial and multi-storied building complexes.

Some commercial buildings have already been identified and notices were issued. A deadline for construction of silt chambers for sewerage connections is expected to be set till the end of December. If the silt chambers were not constructed till then, strict action is being contemplated, the water board said.
