The encroachments resulted in annual flooding in several localities, including Paigah Colony, Patny Housing Colony, Viman Nagar, BHEL Colony, and Indiramma Nagar, every monsoon
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (Hydraa) cleared a major bottleneck at Patny nala by demolishing a commercial complex that was built by encroaching nala at Rasoolpura on Friday. A few other unauthorised structures along the 150-metre stretch of the nala were also demolished.
For the demolitions taken up in response to a complaint from the locals, the Hydraa deployed bulldozers in the early hours of Friday. The Hydraa Commissioner, AV Ranganath on Thursday inspected the nala along with SCB Chief Executive Officer, D Madhukar Naik, and revenue and irrigation wing officials.
The width of the nala was found to have shrunk due to unauthorised structures during the inspection. According to blueprints, the nala width is 70 feet which had shrunk to 15 to 18 feet. The officials noticed that over 70 to 80 per cent of the nala’s width was being encroached upon, causing annual flooding in several localities, including Paigah Colony, Patny Housing Colony, Viman Nagar, BHEL Colony, and Indiramma Nagar, every monsoon.
A resident of Patny Housing Colony, Ranjeeta Dhanapalan, said, “Our localities used to be marooned every monsoon. Several cars were also damaged due to flooding in our area.” SCB Chief Executive Officer, D Madhukar Naik, said, “This is a big relief for all those low-lying areas and people living near the Patny Nala.”
