Hyderabad: Normal life in Old City was largely affected due to incessant rainfall on Wednesday.

Several main thoroughfares such as the Dabeerpura, Falaknuma, Bandlaguda, Aramgarh, Chatrinaka and Khilwat road were under a sheet of water. Motorists faced hardships while negotiating through the water-filled roads.

“The GHMC failed to take up rectification works despite being alerted last monsoon and people here are suffering in the rains,” complained Mohd Mubashir, a businessman from Jahanuma.

The condition of roads in several areas have worsened due to continuous downpour. The Muradnagar road, Mangalhat stretch and Nawab Sahab Kunta road are worst hit. “The roads have numerous potholes, if we are not careful, falling down is imminent,” said Syed Ashraf, a resident of Nawab Sahab Kunta.

In view of rains several educational institutions situated in the low-lying areas of Tallabkatta, Hassannagar, Moula ka Chilla, Uppuguda, and Yakutpura declared a holiday as a precautionary measure.

Business activity was affected to a large extent. The commercial markets at Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Shehran, Madina Building, Doodh Bowli wore a deserted look with shoppers staying away from the market due to rains.

“The business has been dull for the last two days, we closed the shop earlier than the regular time yesterday (Tuesday), again today (Wednesday) will close it down by 9 pm,” said Younus Mohd Khan, who owns an apparel shop at Doodh Bowli.
