Hyderabad: The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech announced granting infrastructure status to data centres. The grant of infrastructure status to data centres is expected to provide access to long-term institutional funds, which will promote the investments in the sector.
B S Rao, VP, Marketing, CtrlS Datacenters told Telangana Today, “The infrastructure status allows data centres to play a key role in enabling digital economy. Must thank the Government for granting infrastructure status to the Indian data centres.”
“It will help data centres in the country gain easier access to institutional credit perhaps at lower rates, attract foreign investments and private capital, besides accelerating data centre deployments in tier-2, tier-3 cities aligned with the roll-out digital banks, digital universities, digital payments, Bharatnet (OFC) across all villages thus paving the way for a vibrant digital India,” Rao added.
Data centres given infrastructure status will give an impetus to the real estate sector, said Anuj Puri, chairman, Anarock Group.
Echoing the positive sentiment, Shishir Baijal, CMD, Knight Frank India, said, “Infrastructure status given to data centres will provide a huge boost to the fast-evolving digital environment of the country.”
The data centre industry capacity is expected to double from 499 MW in H1 2021 to 1008 MW in 2023. Increasing optic fibre network and 5G spectrum allocation would mean higher digital push which will increase real estate demand, noted Radha Dhir, CEO & Country Head, India, JLL.
Sumit Mukhija, CEO, STT GDC India said, the attribution of “infrastructure status” to the data centres is indeed a welcome move. This announcement will enable concerted efforts on multiple fronts, including 5G rollout, infrastructure development and policy reforms and will help in creation of a wider and stronger digital ecosystem in India.
