Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Hyderabad urged to adopt rainwater conservation
T Kiran Reddy, Director at Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Central Nodal Officer of Jal Shakti Abhiyan, warns of alarming groundwater depletion and urges collective action from citizens, RWAs, NGOs; advocates rainwater harvesting and community participation under 'Catch the Rain 2025' campaign
Hyderabad: With groundwater levels depleting sharply in the city, immediate collective action is required from resident welfare associations, non-governmental organisations, and citizens, said T Kiran Reddy, Director at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Central Nodal Officer of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
Reddy was in the city to interact with government agencies, including the Groundwater Department, HMWSSB, and revenue authorities. He concluded his three-day visit on Friday by visiting the Community Hall and SBH Colony in Saidabad and engaging with Resident Welfare Associations and representatives from various NGOs as part of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan under the Catch the Rain 2025 campaign.
“Hyderabad is classified as an over-exploited district — where annual water consumption exceeds natural recharge, leading to steady groundwater depletion. This is a matter of grave concern and requires immediate collective action,” Reddy said.
He urged citizens and civic bodies to adopt simple yet effective measures such as rainwater harvesting pits, borewell recharge systems, and zero-runoff household practices to conserve rainwater and reduce urban flooding. Emphasising community participation, Reddy said, “Let us transform Hyderabad into a water-smart city — where every drop is conserved, every citizen is empowered, and every effort counts. Let us catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls.”
