Hyderabad: Jonna Upma/ Jowar / Sorghum Millet Upma is a tasty, nutritious, and super healthy recipe ideal for breakfast or dinner. Sorghum is a healthy alternative for many products as it is gluten-free, vegan, and superfood. Many recipes like roti, porridge, upma, pulao, pongal, dosa, idli, and even khichdi can be made with it. Sorghum rava/ semolina can be made at home easily and we even get it in supermarkets. Regular and daily consumption of sorghum is extremely beneficial for our health.
Upma is a common breakfast recipe especially across south India and India as well. Many variants and seasonings are added during cooking depending on the preferences. It is considered as easiest and staple breakfast recipe. We have many variants in upma as well like tomato upma, vegetable upma that are normally cooked with semolina/. It can also be made with various millets, wheat semolina or semolina Made with Rice. But Sorghum is considered a superfood, as it is a combination of many nutrients that helps us in weight loss, improving bone health, blood circulation, sugar levels, and also helps in maintaining stable energy levels in the body the entire day.
* Sorghum semolina : 1 cup
* Ghee : 1 tablespoon (Oil can also be used)
* Cashews : As needed (optional)
* Bengal gram dal : 1 teaspoon
* Black gram dal : 1 teaspoon
* Mustard seeds : 1/2 a teaspoon
* Cumin seeds : 1/2 a teaspoon
* Ginger : 1/2 a teaspoon finely chopped
* Green chilies : 2 to 3 slit
* Onion : 1 cut into long pieces
* Curry leaves : Reeds
* Carrot : 1 finely chopped
* Green peas : As needed
* Tomato : 1 diced
* Water : 3 cups
* Salt : 3/4 teaspoon
* Coriander leaves : A few strands finely chopped
* Lemon juice : A squeeze if wish to
Preparation
* Jonna Upma / upma with sorghum tasty and healthy with veggies in it.
* Do check for the link in the description box.
* Heat a pan add a Tablespoon of Ghee/Oil let it melt.
* Add Cashews as needed, roast them and place them aside for a while. It”s optional.
* Sorghum Semolina can also be roasted if wish to.
* To the same Ghee/ Oil add a Teaspoon of Bengal Gram and Black Gram Dal sauté them until they change color.
* Add 1/2 a Teaspoon of Mustard and Cumin Seeds let splutter. Peanuts can also be added if needed.
* Add 1/2 a Teaspoon of Finely chopped Ginger, 2 to 3 Green Chilies slit, add an Onion cut into long pieces.
* Add 2 Reeds of Curry Leaves, sauté them for a while.
* Add a finely chopped Carrot, a few Green Peas and any veggies of our choice can be added as they enhance the taste.
* Add a chopped Tomato sauté, place a lid and let it cook until soft.
* Add 3 Cups of water to it and bring it to a boil along with 3/4 Teaspoon of Salt to it.
* Adjust the taste and add Sorghum Semolina, mix and cook it on low flame with a lid and with no lumps in it.
* Let it cook for 3 more minutes, add some finely chopped Coriander Leaves.
* Add some more ghee and roasted cashews, let it cook for a while place a lid, and put off the flame.
* Let it rest for a while with a lid on it and serve it with some squeeze of lemon if wish to.
* Serve hot and relish the healthy upma.
