Warangal Urban: Kiran Kumar Paindla, a research scholar in the Department of English, Kakatiya University (KU), was awarded PhD degree by the university recently. He submitted his thesis titled “Content and Language Integrated Learning: A Study of Undergraduate Teaching Materials in Kakatiya University”.
He did his research under the supervision of Dr K Purushotham, Professor of English, Registrar, Kakatiya University. Kiran Kumar earlier worked at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, as a guest faculty for five years and Jayamukhi Engineering College for nine years.
Presently, he is working in the Department of English, University Post Graduate College, Kakatiya University, Warangal. He is an expert in Soft Skills training and Communication Skills, and several of his students got placed in many multinational companies (MNCs).
Kiran’s research is very relevant to the Telugu medium students who study in the mother tongue as a medium of instruction and find it very difficult to learn English, a foreign language. The incorporation of local culture as teaching materials into the curriculum makes students identify themselves, rather than basing them upon British and American literature. This aspect of ‘local colour’ in ESL material helps learners identify and connect with the content.
Culture-specific content will aim at tapping the popular interests of the students in language learning. The present research on study materials of undergraduate learners of KU focuses on the advantages of integrating language and content.
“Culturally familiar Study Materials as Content in English Language Teaching” examined the theoretical aspects of the teaching materials and investigated the seminal role of culture in determining content in English Language Teaching when designing curriculum for undergraduate students. The study delineated the characteristics and benefits of implementing CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in ESL/EFL classrooms at the undergraduate level in Kakatiya University, Telangana.
