Khammam: District Collector VP Gautham has advised women to take up self-employment to become financially independent. He distributed certificates and sewing machines to women who completed a three-month free training course offered by National Academy of Construction (NAC) in Khammam on Friday. The programme was organised under the aegis of district Minority Welfare Department.

As many as 25 women were given sewing machines free of cost. Addressing the gathering the Collector said becoming financially independent would make the women confident. He told them to improve their skills further and follow changing trends to be successful in the field.

Garments making and tailoring would always have demand in the market, Gautham said, adding that the women who completed the course should inspire and stand as a model to others with their success. District Minority Welfare Officer Jyothi , NAC AD, Nagender and trainer Shaik Sameena were present.

Later in the day, the Collector inaugurated a three-day book fair organised by Central Bookshop of Hyderabad at Sequel Resorts in Khammam. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed on the need of book reading to improve one’s knowledge and asked the public to make use of the book fair.

With the advent of modern technology these days the younger generation has been occupied with televisions, smartphones and tablets. Elders should guide their children to develop the practice of book reading among them, Gautham suggested. The book fair organiser, Siddarth informed that books catering to the needs of kids and children below 18 years of age were on display at the book fair while urging the citizens to make the book fair a success. Deputy Mayor Fatima Zohara and Trainee Collector B Rahul were present.
