Hyderabad: In a unique health care initiative, the Lions International has adopted Burgula village and have contributed a fully equipped 12-bedded medical ward at Primary Health Centre (PHC), Burgula for the benefit of the local people and surrounding villages and tandas.
The health care initiative of Lions Enfield, UK and supported by Lions Shadnagar is in memory of brother and sisters Burgula Narsing Rao and Dr Suguna Rammohan, both of whom were born in Burgula village and contributed significantly towards overall development of the village.
The medical ward was formally inaugurated by the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Dr Swarajya Laxmi, Deputy, DM&HO, Dr Damodhar and former sarpanch Burgula Sumana on December 28, with assurances from the Burgula family and Lions Organisations for their continued support in the future.
The local health officials said that the Burgula PHC was the only facility in the district equipped with 12 bedded inpatient ward, which will play an important in improving institutional deliveries and safety for women during pregnancy. In addition to equipping the ward, several medical equipment in the PHC were replaced, and new accessories were installed.
The Burgula village has deep links to Burgula Venkateshwar Rao, a freedom fighter who strived for the welfare of the local residents. Along with his sister Dr. Suguna Ram Mohan, they frequently conducted medical camps in the village.
Dr. Srikanth Mandumula, son of late Dr. Suguna Ram Mohan and his wife Dr. Madhavi , along with the family were instrumental in raising awareness and funding under the auspices of Lions Club of Enfield, UK.
