Hyderabad: A tasty, tangy tomato pickle can be prepared instantly, with simple ingredients and with no much time and efforts. It pairs well with any breakfast variants like idli, dosa, vada, pongal, roti and the best with upma. It can also be served with rice as well with a dollop of ghee.

This variant of pickle/ chutney can be stored for a months’ time and if refrigerated for 2 to 3 months. This chutney/ pickle is a delicious dip with sandwiches, French fries and tortillas as well.


Tomatoes are major dietary source of antioxidants. They also have potassium, Vitamin B and E and a few nutrients.

Serves : 4
Ingredients:
* Tomatoes : 1/4 Kg
* Salt : 3 teaspoons or as needed
* Chilli powder : 5 teaspoons
* Mustard powder : 2 teaspoons
* Cumin and fenugreek powder : 1 teaspoon
* Garlic : 1 pod crushed
* Oil : 3 tablespoons
* Mustard seeds : 1 teaspoon
* Cumin seeds : 1/2 a teaspoon
* Red chilies : 2 nos

Method:

* Cut tomatoes into long pieces into 6 to 8 pieces depending on the size, preferably choose not so ripe ones.

* Transfer them to a bowl, add chilli powder, salt and adjust the taste as needed.

* Add mustard powder, cumin and fenugreek powder, coarsely ground or crushed garlic and mix them all well.

* Let it rest for a while, heat a pan with 3 tbsp of oil.

* Add 1 tsp of mustard seeds and 1/2 a tsp of cumin seeds, 2 red chillies, let them all splutter and put off the flame.

* Let it cool down then, add the temper to the tomato mixture.

* Adjust the taste and the pickle is ready, add a squeeze of lemon to it.
