Hyderabad: The MBBS students at the Government Medical College, Medak, on Tuesday raised alarm over unsafe hostel and mess conditions and sought intervention of authorities to improve hostel living standards and address the unhygienic conditions in the mess.
The students said the hostel premises have become highly unsafe, with snakes and scorpions frequently entering the rooms. Recently, two students suffered scorpion stings.
“During the ongoing rains, the risk of snake and scorpion bites has increased. Poisonous snakes, including Russell’s vipers and cobras, have been repeatedly spotted in hostel premises and entering rooms, creating fear among students and posing a threat to our safety,” they said.
The situation is particularly alarming as first-year MBBS students prepare for their university examinations in the coming months. Instead of studying in a safe and peaceful environment, students say they are forced to live under constant fear.
The condition of the hostel mess is distressing, with water leaking into the dining hall during rains and making it difficult to eat in a hygienic environment. The poor maintenance of the mess only added to the hardships, students said.
“We urge the authorities to take action ensuring effective snake and pest control measures, improving hostel safety, repairing the infrastructure, and renovating the mess facilities. The safety, health, and welfare of medical students must be treated as a priority, and prompt intervention is essential to prevent any unfortunate incidents,” the students added.
