Hyderabad: Number of private school students shifting to government schools is increasing each day. Around 2.2 lakh students from private schools have joined in Classes I to X in government, local body, model schools, urban residential schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) across the State so far this academic year.
Earlier in August this year, the number of private school students joining schools under the School Education Department was pegged at 1.14 lakh. The trend is not new for this academic year. In 2019-20, 68,813 students shifted from private to government schools. According to a senior School Education Department official, at least 70,000 to 80,000 students have been shifting to government schools from private schools each year.
Quality and free education with qualified teachers are among several reasons prompting parents to shift their wards from private to government schools. On the other hand, government-run schools under the department have registered 1.87 lakh admissions in Class I this academic year. As admissions are still under way, the number of students enrolling in government schools will further go up, officials said.
