Nizamabad: In a rare instance, thieves who stole ancient panchaloha (a mixture of five metals) and copper idols from a temple in Nizamabad district a few days ago, returned them on Sunday by neatly packing them in boxes.
Even before the police could nab them, the thieves delivered the idols, which were stolen from Ramalayam at Kandakurthi village under Renjal police station limits in the district on January 7, in boxes along with essential commodities required for free distribution of food to poor at the temple in an auto rickshaw.
However, on Sunday the temple priest Anand Maharaj informed the police that two persons came to the temple informing that Umri Birju Maharaj Joshi sent essential commodities for ‘Annadhanam’ programme on February 2 in an auto rickshaw.
After the two persons left the temple, the priest opened the bags containing 10 kgs of rice, sugar and other essential commodities. He opened another bag and found a carton box in it. He then opened it only to find the idols of lord Sitarama. The priest alerted the police, who rushed to the temple and opened other boxes.
The police officials found several ancient idols and silver crowns in the boxes. They said they started working on clues and other technical details to nab thieves after registering a case of theft in the temple. But fearing that they would be arrested by the police for stealing idols, the thieves would have hired an auto rickshaw and sent it to the temple with essential commodities along with the stolen idols.
