Hyderabad: Surgeons at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) have performed a living donor liver transplant on a 22-month-old baby.

The toddler, Md Afan, was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) Type III, a rare inherited metabolic liver disorder reported in the range of one case per one lakh population. The ailment can lead to recurrent low blood sugar, muscle weakness, liver enlargement and progressive organ damage if left untreated.

The baby was admitted with symptoms of excessive hunger (hyperphagia), abdominal distension, recurrent hypoglycaemia (blood glucose less than 50 mg/dl), elevated triglycerides, high cholesterol, along with abnormal liver function tests and liver enlargement.

Head, Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation, OGH, Dr Ch Madhusudhan, who led the surgery, said a liver transplantation was taken up and the infant’s father donated a small piece of his liver for the living donor liver transplantation.

“The surgery was completed under the Aarogyasri scheme, which also includes free lifelong immunosuppressant medicines. The child is recovering well post-transplant. Such high-end complex procedures could cost upwards of Rs 50 lakh in private hospitals. This is the first case to undergo liver transplantation for GSD in a government hospital in India,” Dr Madhusudhan said.
