Patient from Somalia undergoes living related liver transplant surgery in Hyderabad

Doctors at Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City, successfully performed a high-risk living donor liver transplant on a 43-year-old Somali patient with advanced liver disease. Despite critical complications, the patient showed steady recovery through multidisciplinary care and rehabilitation.

Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City on Friday announced successful high-risk Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) on a 43-year-old Somalian male patient suffering from advanced decompensated chronic liver disease.

The patient’s brother came forward and decided to donate a section of his liver for the transplant surgery, which was carried out on October 18, 2025. The patient, when was admitted to the hospital, was in an extremely bad health condition.


The patient remained unconscious for nearly 12 days prior to transplantation. Liver function tests showed severe deterioration, Dr Kishore Reddy, Lead Liver Transplant Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City, said.

The senior surgeon said that the transplant surgery was challenging due to the patient’s critical neurological status and severely compromised liver function. A timely decision, precise surgical execution, and coordinated multidisciplinary care were crucial in achieving a successful outcome.

A team of doctors from multiple departments in the hospital participated in the surgery and recovery of the patient. Due to prolonged critical illness, the patient developed critical illness–related polyneuromyopathy, resulting in severe muscle weakness. With structured physiotherapy and rehabilitation, he showed gradual improvement.
