Hyderabad: Surgeons at Aster Prime Hospitals, Hyderabad, on Friday announced the successful treatment of a 43-year-old patient who suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing surgery for the removal of a tumour in the brain. The neurosurgeons went on to complete the operation, which resulted in a full neurological recovery, the press release said.
The patient, a carpenter by profession from Hyderabad, had a history of diabetes and was overweight.
“Sixty minutes into surgery, after partial tumour removal and opening of the brain, the patient’s heart rate suddenly dropped, leading to cardiac arrest. Performing CPR during open brain surgery is challenging, as the head is elevated to manage intracranial pressure. The team flattened the operating table to enable effective resuscitation and administered three rounds of electrical stimulation to the heart with a defibrillator,” Dr P Ranganadham, Head, Neurosurgery, Aster Prime Hospitals, who led the surgery, said.
For nearly an hour, the team worked relentlessly and, after sustained efforts, the patient’s heart restarted. Despite the crisis, the neurosurgeons continued with the surgery and managed to remove the tumour successfully.
