January 26 marks the day The Indian Constitution was adopted in 1950 and brought in to effect. This is a very significant day in the history of our nation, depicting the attainment of true independence or Purna Swaraj, nearly three years after independence.
India was under the rule of the British for over 200 years before the nation was independent and until the formation of our Constitution, the Indian laws were based on the Government of India Act of 1935.
The drafting committee of the Constitution was headed by Dr BR Ambedkar, who extensively studied constitutions of other nations to aid in drafting an ideal Constitution for our nation with its diverse cultures and practices to ensure all citizens could enjoy equal rights about their religions, culture, caste, sex and creed.
People celebrate this day as a national holiday with patriotic fervour and pay their respects by hoisting tricolours. President of India hoists the National Flag in Delhi with a regal parade by the soldiers, boy scouts, girl guides, NCC and many others.
Republic day evokes a strong emotion of patriotism in the hearts of every Indian citizen and serves as a day that reminds us of our duty to the nation. In 2021, the post-pandemic year, India will be celebrating its 72nd Republic day with grandeur.
