Peddapalli: Riding on the success of Phase-1& II Miyawaki plantation at its oxidation pond area, National Thermal Power Corporation, Ramagundam recently launched Phase-I1I Miyawaki plantation at Ganganagar park of Ramagundam Municipal Corporation (RMC).

A total of 8003 trees with 54 varieties are planted covering 4176 sqmt area. Belonging to RMC, the Ganganagar park was filled with ash and bushes. Efforts were taken to make it suitable for plantation with removal of bushes and ash and subsequently filling with red soil.

Developed in association with TSFDCL, the Phase-III of Miyawaki Plantation has gone through a scientific way of planting. After selection of the location with a secured boundary wall, eight sectors developed with each bed digging up to 0.60 meter depth followed by filling with various layers of rice husk, farmyard manure, cocopeat and jeevamrutham.

Subsequently, planting points are marked at a grid of 0.75M X 0.75M and then species of high canopy – 13 varieties, medium canopy – 18 varieties and low canopy – 23 varieties are planted in these planting points.

To its credit, NTPC-Ramagundam is successfully maintaining the Phase-I&II Miyawaki project at its oxidation pond area covering over 7,662 sqmt with plantation of around 14,034 trees. Launched on January 23, 2020, the Miyawaki project fast developed into a dense forest with 100% survival and set an ideal example of urban foresting.

Going with its success and the company’s commitment in enriching the environment, NTPC is further expanding the Phase-III at Gautamnagar area with a plantation of around 5 to 10 thousand trees as per availability of land.

The Miyawaki method of afforestation which has revolutionized the concept of urban afforestation by turning backyards into mini-forest has been pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This method is ideal for urban spaces where a few cents of land can be set aside to increase the green cover.
