Visakhapatnam: The Praja Arogya Vedika, affiliated to Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revive pharma units and vaccine plants in the public sector and begin manufacturing the COVID and other essential drugs under the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat programme.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister here on Tuesday, MV Ramanaiah and T. Kameswara Rao, president and general secretary respectively of the Vedika, noted that the entire world as well as India were now witnessing the surge of Omicron variant along with different mutations which were going to affect the life of people. “In this context, the experts are confirming that this virus will have many more mutations and variants which will not only affect the life of people but will also stay with us for a long time. In future also, these kinds of viruses will get generated and impact people’s health,” they feared.

To combat the future health challenges, they urged upon the Centre to immediately revive and restart the public sector pharma units and public sector vaccine companies and start producing the medicines and vaccines for COVID and other essential life saving medicines under Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

Since it was a matter of health emergency to save the people of the country, the life saving patented drugs should be manufactured by issuing compulsory license and make all the medicines accessible to the common man at cheaper price, they said, and sought the intervention of the Prime Minister in the matter.
