Hyderabad: Taking serious note of rising complaints of harassment and forced money collection, City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Friday cautioned transgender groups that strict action will be taken against anyone resorting to extortion.
Addressing a meeting with around 250 transgender persons at CESS, Ameerpet, the Commissioner said the police have received several grievances about groups visiting homes during auspicious occasions and demanding large sums.
“Forced collections and harassment of citizens are unacceptable. Anyone taking the law into their own hands will face jail,” he warned.
Sajjanar also highlighted internal disputes within the community that have led to clashes and, in some cases, fatalities. He assured that while the police will act firmly on violations, they will support those seeking to live with dignity.
ADGP (Women Safety Wing) Charu Sinha urged transgender persons to approach the Pride Place support system for any grievance. She said the police are committed to ensuring their safety and social integration.
Rajender, Additional Director of Transgender Welfare, noted that Telangana has nearly 50,000 transgender persons and encouraged them to obtain government ID cards to benefit from welfare schemes and emerging job opportunities.
