Sangareddy: Celebrations marking one year in office have backfired for Sangareddy Municipal Commissioner S.C.V.K. Prasad Chavan, who has been attached to the Municipal Administration head office after leading an unauthorised staff tour that disrupted civic services.
Chavan, who took charge as Municipal Commissioner in February 2024, organised a special tour to the Tulja Bhavani temple in Maharashtra on June 3. Two private buses were hired for the trip, carrying a large number of municipal employees considered loyal to him. However, none of the employees had applied for leave or informed higher authorities of their absence.
As a result, civic services across several departments were severely affected due to the mass absence of staff, leading to public inconvenience. The issue came to light after citizens and union leaders raised concerns with the district administration.
District Collector Valluru Kranthi ordered an inquiry into the incident and tasked Additional Collector (Local Bodies) B. Chandrashekhar with probing the matter. The inquiry confirmed that the Commissioner and employees had gone on the tour without prior approval or sanctioned leave. Based on the findings, the Collector wrote to the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration, recommending departmental action against Chavan.
In swift action, Chavan was attached to the head office even before he returned from the tour. Dubbak Municipal Commissioner Srinivas Reddy was given additional charge of Sangareddy Municipality.
Meanwhile, employees who accompanied Chavan on the trip are also facing uncertainty, fearing disciplinary action for their unauthorised absence.
Sources said Chavan had arranged the trip to celebrate his one-year anniversary in office and hosted a party during the return journey, seeking continued support from staff. However, the move backfired, with higher authorities taking serious note of the misconduct and initiating action.
