Sangareddy: Unidentified persons tied up 32 street dogs, using wires to gag them and tie their legs, and threw them from a bridge near Eddumailaram village in Kandi mandal.
Following information from some citizens on the night of January 4, volunteers of Citizens for Animals (CFA) led by Prithvi Paneru visited the spot. They then sought the help of the Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS) to rescue the street dogs. However, by that time, 21 of the dogs had died. Veterinary Department officials conducted an autopsy on them and the samples were sent to the forensic lab for tests. The dogs were infested with maggots even though some of them were alive. The remaining 11 dogs were shifted to the People for Animals shelter in Nagole. However, two of them died and the condition of three is still critical.
Prithvi said only six dogs, including two puppies, would probably survive. When Prithvi approached the Indrakaran police to lodge a complaint, the Sub-Inspector allegedly refused to file any case initially. However, Prithvi sought help from animal rights activist and former union minister Maneka Gandhi, who called Superintendent of Police Chennuri Rupesh and asked him to accept the complaint. The police are yet to identify the persons who threw the dogs off the bridge.
The CFA has urged the police to identify the culprits without delay and initiate stern action against them.
