Khammam: Bowing to public protests, the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities have withdrawn their decision to close the Nagalwancha railway station in Khammam district.
It may be recalled that SCR Assistant Commercial Manager B Sunitha had issued a circular a few days ago announcing the closure of the station in the Secunderabad division, citing low passenger traffic.
Following the decision, locals staged protests demanding that the station remain operational, as residents from about 15 villages, including Nagalwancha, Patharlapadu, Poddutur, Ramapuram, Seetampet, Chinna Mandava, Govindapuram, and Lakshmipuram, relied on it for travel.
The station, with a history of 77 years, was once the main transportation hub for students, farm labourers, and farmers, especially when proper road connectivity was lacking.
In response to the protests and representations made by elected representatives, SCR Assistant Commercial Manager B Sunitha issued another circular on August 14, officially withdrawing the closure decision.
CPI (ML) Mass Line Chintakani mandal in-charge Koleti Nageswara Rao welcomed the move and urged the authorities to develop the station by providing adequate passenger amenities.
