SCR’s anti-collision system ‘Kavach’ deployed in 144 locomotives under SCR zone

The Indian Railways have developed ‘Kavach’, to prevent accidents due to human error resulting in signal failure and over speeding

Hyderabad: ‘Kavach’, the indigenous anti-collision system developed by the Indian Railway, has been deployed on 1,465 route km and 144 locomotives across the South Central Railway (SCR) zone.

The Indian Railways have developed ‘Kavach’, to prevent accidents due to human error resulting in signal failure and over speeding.

The Indian Railways have  recently approved the new version Kavach 4.0 incorporating lessons learned from the previous implementations.

“It is a completely indigenous technology developed by the Indian Railway. If there is any human error, immediately the system takes control of the train speed and automatically controls track changing and speed restriction. It will stop if there is any obstacle ahead and chance of collision,” said a senior SCR official, adding the technology was on par with similar technologies in the world.

Other benefits of ‘Kavach’ include controlling speed of trains by automatic application of brakes on approach of turnouts, repeating of signal aspects in cab, which is useful for higher speeds and foggy weathers, and auto whistling at level crossing gates.
