Hyderabad: The Women Development and Child Welfare Department on Friday opened seven transit homes for children whose parents are currently quarantined or hospitalised due to Covid-19. These homes under the GHMC limits will provide free shelter, food, recreational activities and psychosocial support to the children.
The transit home at the WDCW Commissionerate campus in Ameerpet was inaugurated by Minister Satyavathi Rathod. A few orphanages and child care institutions including Prajwala’s Astha Nivas, Donbosco Home for Boys have come forward to offer space in their homes. The homes will have a warden, consultant doctor, counsellor and cook and each home can accommodate at least 20 children, below the age of 14.
“Children will undergo Covid test before entering transit home. In case a child tests positive, they’ll be shifted to a hospital or a quarantine centre as per the doctor’s suggestion. Plans are underway to launch the initiative in other districts too,” an official said. Recently, WDCW also launched a special help desk for children who lost their parents or guardians due to Covid-19 and need assistance. To seek help, dial 04023733665 or 1098.
