Warangal: The members of the Society to Save Rocks arrived in Warangal on Saturday and visited the magnificent rocks at Madikonda before heading to the 1000 pillar temple and then to the Padmakshi temple and hill. The Society secretary Frauke Quader, joint secretary Sangeeta Varma were among others who visited these places.
The Society formed in 1996, is the only one-of-its-kind in India, that has been working on conserving the granite rock formations that are the natural heritage of Telangana State. It has been spreading awareness for the need for conservation of these 2.5 – 3 Billion years old granite rocks by conducting rock walks and various awareness programmes including Hanamakonda, Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts.
Former Professor of NITW and INTACH, Warangal, Convenor M Panduranga Rao, who played a key role in getting the UNESCO world heritage tag for Ramappa temple, joined the members during the visit to the Thousand Pillar temple and Padmakshigutta.
Prof Rao explained in detail the works undertaken by the Government in restoring the Thousand Pillar temple, and detailed the government’s efforts to develop the Ramappa temple as one of the major tourist spots in Telangana. The Society members also visited Ramappa temple and Pandavula Gutta (Pandava Caves) in Regonda mandal of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
