Hyderabad: A partial lunar eclipse, which is also the last eclipse that would be visible from India in 2021, will occur today. The various phases of the partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible in the western Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia, etc, will begin from 11.30 am and end by 5.35 pm on Friday.

The partial lunar eclipse will not be visible across the country but skygazers in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh can witness the celestial event.

“The moon rises at around 4.24 pm in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh while in the rest of the country, it rises very late. For example like most of the States, moon will rise at 5.43 pm in Hyderabad on Friday. Most of the people across the country will miss observing lunar eclipse because the moon rises late,” explains noted amateur astronomer and founder of Planetary Society, India, N Sri Raghunandan Kumar.

The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in India will occur on November 19, 2022 while the last lunar eclipse that was visible in few places in India was on May 26, 2021. The last time when a total lunar eclipse in India was visible to people throughout the country was on January 31, 2018.

The partial lunar eclipse today will also be a lengthy one. “Lunar eclipse occurs when moon passes through the shadow of earth. On Sunday, November 21, moon will reach the farthest point in its orbit called as apogee. So eclipse of moon on Friday occurs 41 hours before earth reaching apogee. Hence as moon on Friday is farther away from earth, it will travel slower along its orbit,” Raghunandan explained.

Highlights
• Partial lunar eclipse today is from 11.30 am to 5.35 pm
• Will not be visible across India
• Will be visible in few parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh
