Hyderabad: The State government has given the nod for the construction of a 800 MW supercritical thermal power station in Ramagundam of Peddapalli district. This power plant would be constructed on the existing 62.5 MW RTS-B Station site.

The government on Saturday issued orders in this regard. The proposed plant would be constructed in a joint venture between TGGENCO and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). The government has asked TGGENCO and SCCL authorities to work out the modalities to form a joint venture to construct the power plant. The TGGENCO has been directed to prepare a Detailed Project Report(DPR) within one month and submit it to the government.

Earlier, the State government was planning to hand over the construction of the proposed plant to SCCL, but under pressure from the TGGENCO unions, the government decided to construct it in a joint venture.

Ramagundam B Super Thermal Power Plant was commissioned in October 1971. In 2017, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) had recommended that the TGGENCO close down the old and technologically outdated Ramagundam B thermal power station to reduce carbon emissions as this plant cannot even go for retrofitting. It also stated that the thermal power station was consuming more coal and producing less power and had a low plant load factor (PLF). Hence, the State government decided to construct a new power plant in its place.
