Hyderabad is witnessing a rise in advanced-stage prostate cancer due to low screening rates and lifestyle factors. Experts stress early detection and routine primary care integration as essential measures to reduce fatalities and improve survival outcomes.

Senior oncologists at Apollo Cancer Centres in Hyderabad emphasised the importance of early diagnosis of prostate cancer during the awareness programme ‘Tame the Fire’. Dr Vijay Anand Reddy described prostate cancer as a “silent fire” that often goes unnoticed until advanced stages, but remains highly treatable if detected early.

The incidence of prostate cancer in men under 50 has significantly increased, according to their observations.

Since the patient had a long history of multiple prior chemotherapies, doctors decided to attempt next-generation sequencing on the tumour tissue, which eventually tested positive for cancer.

Dr P Prabhakar , RCOO, AOI, said "Using AI, advancements in radiotherapy can enhance accessibility, efficiency, improve treatment precision. This is for the first time that we have combined both technologies to ensure best outcome and quality of life for the patients in Telangana."

The study, presented today at the European Association of Urology Congress, EAU21, followed more than 1500 patients over three years.

Prostate cancer is up to 57 per cent heritable, with the remainder attributed to environmental exposures. However, studies on those environmental factors and prostate cancer aggressiveness have previously been limited.

The new scanner is now two times faster than the old generation scanners primarily due to the advanced technology known as 'Time of Flight'.

"A Mediterranean diet is non-invasive, good for overall health and, as shown by this study, has the potential to effect the progression of their cancer," said the lead researcher, Justin Gregg, Assistant Professor at the University of Texas.
