Hyderabad: The State Health Department has directed private hospitals across Hyderabad and elsewhere in Telangana to avoid allocating hospital beds to mild and asymptomatic Covid-19 positive patients, which could create a shortage for deserving patients.
Mild and asymptomatic Covid positive patients do not need hospital admissions. If private hospitals do not follow the Covid-19 treatment guidelines of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) and allocate hospital beds to such patients, then they are robbing hospitals beds from deserving patients, Director of Public Health (DPH), Dr G Srinivasa Rao on Thursday said.
At present, only 1 per cent of the Covid-19 positive cases due to Omicron variant may need hospital care and none of them need oxygen or ventilator. A majority of them can recover in home isolation, which has been clearly suggested by MOHFW.
Corporate hospitals under GHMC must ensure they follow Covid-19 treatment protocol and guidelines established by MOHFW and ICMR. They must strictly screen Covid-19 positive patients before allocating hospital beds to them, Dr Srinivasa Rao said.
Strict action will be taken on private hospitals that unnecessarily take-up hospital admissions of undeserving Covid-19 positive patients. It is mandatory for all to follow the protocols and guidelines that have been provided by MOHFW/ ICMR, the DPH said.
The senior public health official has urged private practitioners to avoid prescribing expensive drugs like Molnupiravir, Tocilizumab and even Monoclonal Antibodies therapy while treating Covid-19 positive infections in the coming days.
“These drugs have been proved to be ineffective in treating Omicron driven Covid-19 infections. Unnecessarily prescribing these drugs will put a lot of financial burden on patients. Doctors should only provide symptomatic treatment and ensure the Covid positive patients are under home isolation for 7 days,” he added.
