Telangana braces for heatwave as temperatures set to rise sharply

Telangana is set to witness a sharp rise in temperatures over the coming days, with IMD forecasting mercury levels touching 44°C in some districts. Officials have issued orange alerts and warned that high humidity combined with intense heat could increase heatstroke risks.

Hyderabad: Telangana is entering a high-intensity weather phase in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, and IMD, New Delhi, have signalled a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2 degree Celsius to 4 degree Celsius across Central India, including the Deccan plateau, over the next five days.

The shift in weather patterns marks the end of the recent cooling effect from thunderstorms.

Districts such as Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Nirmal are currently under an orange alert, and mercury levels are projected to surge into the 41 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius range by middle of this week.

The capital region will see a sharp transition from the current 37 to 39 degree Celsius to over 41 degree Celsius by Tuesday or Wednesday.

In districts like Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam, temperatures are expected to stay slightly lower and range from 38 to 40 degree Celsius in the coming day or two before witnessing a major surge in the mercury levels.

Interestingly, the forecasts by IMD-New Delhi and even the IMD, Hyderabad have indicated that humidity levels could continue to range between 50 per cent and 70 per cent. The combination of high heat and high humidity has the potential to cause public health challenges like heat stroke.

Meanwhile, in the last 24-hours (till 8.30 am on Monday), districts that recorded the maximum temperatures (in degree Celsius) across Telangana include Nizamabad (41.6), Adilabad (41.3), Khammam (40.2), Nalgonda (39.6), Mahabubnagar and Ramagundam (39.2), Hanmakonda (39), Bhadrachalam (38.8), Hyderabad (37.8) and Hakimpet (38.7).
