Hyderabad: In the wake of the resurgence of Covid-19 infections due to Omicron in US, United Kingdom and other European countries, the State government on Tuesday decided to further intensify preparedness at government hospitals to meet any kind of exigencies, in case of a third wave of Covid infections.
As part of these efforts, the State government has decided to procure 21 lakh home isolation Covid kits, increase medical oxygen generating capacity in Telangana to 545 metric tonnes (MT) per day and set up a committee of senior health officials to closely monitor the rise of Covid infections driven by Omicron in India and other countries.
In all, there are 27,996 government hospital beds in Telangana that are dedicated for Covid-19 positive patients out of which 25,826 beds have direct medical oxygen supply lines.
Health Minister T Harish Rao in a review meeting here on Tuesday directed health officials to complete the laying up of oxygen lines to the remaining hospital beds and to ensure there is enough buffer stock of life saving medicines at the central drug stores.
“Ever since the end of the second-Covid wave, we have been preparing for a future surge in infections by augmenting medical infrastructure. While the State government has taken all possible measures, I urge the general public to get vaccinated and stick to usage of masks, which is vital to prevent the third wave,” Harish Rao said.
During the second wave, Telangana had a capacity to generate 150 MT of medical oxygen per day, which was enhanced to 350 MT in the last few months. The State government now has decided to further enhance the capacity to 545 MTs of medical oxygen per day.
