Detroit, Michigan (USA): The spirit of unity and joy filled the air as more than 350 families from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, residing in Metro Detroit area, came together for a lively community get-together organised by Global Telangana Association, Detroit Chapter at Shiawassee Park in Farmington Hills, here on Saturday.
The event, organised by Global Telangana Association’s Detroit chapter, showcased the authentic culinary traditions of Telangana. The organisers emphasised the importance of fostering togetherness in today’s fast-paced world.
“This gathering is more than just a celebration — it’s a reminder of the strength we draw from our shared values and mutual respect,” said GTA (USA) president, Praveen Kesireddy, in his welcome address.
The occasion, which also marked the 11th anniversary of Telangana Formation, brought people of all ages together for a full day of cultural performances, sports and games, interactive activities and heartfelt camaraderie, reinforcing the bonds within the neighbourhood.
Attendees were treated to melodious musical Telugu folk songs that highlighted the cultural heritage of Telangana. Children participated in fun-filled games. The food that was served contained an array of Telangana delicacies, like the flavorful Bhagara rice, soupy chicken curry, spinach and mango dal, the signature pachi pulusu, beetroot raita, spicy mutton curry, rokati pachadi (chutneys), curd rice, crispy snacks and sweet delicacies, some of them prepared on-site even before the crowds swelled. Each dish reflected the essence of Telangana’s vibrant food culture among others, adding a flavourful touch to the festivities.
A highlight of the afternoon was a raffle draw, musical chairs and lemon spoon race for ladies, and races for children under-10 years, which truly engaged the large gathering. Sound of laughter and chatter of families and friends was on display. Members experienced the warmth and hospitality of Telangana’s traditional get-togethers. The event concluded with a collective pledge to organise more such initiatives, promoting inclusivity and harmony.
“It’s heartwarming to see neighbours laughing, dancing, and sharing stories. Events like these make our community feel like family,” said Niveditha Bitla who is visiting her son and daughter in Detroit area.
It was a joyous occasion that symbolised the spirit of unity, identity, and progress of Telangana. GTA has expressed gratitude to volunteers, sponsors, and local authorities for their support and announced plans for future engagements, including upcoming initiatives. The success of the gathering underscored the power of collective joy in strengthening societal ties.
With women and children turning out in colourful summer fabrics, Shiawassee’s landscape resembled a sprawling garden of charming flowers.
With a stream of Shiawassee river quietly meandering through the meadows and woodlands of the park, some used the occasion to get behind the lens and take photos with their favorite friends in the natural settings. All in all, the setting was picture-perfect.
The event featured a general health (check-up) camp for all ages with doctors drawn from the local hospitals. There were stalls with beauty and fancy items which attracted young girls and women.
