Hyderabad: It’s more than half a century later that parts of Telangana experienced an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richters Scale, which occurred on Wednesday at 7.27 am in Mulugu with Medaram as the epicentre.
Head (retd) of Seismology, Hyderabad-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Dr Sri Nagesh said: “It was in 1969 that an earthquake of the same magnitude hit the Bhadrachalam region. The seismology division of NGRI has been for the past few decades closely monitoring seismic activity along the Bhadrachalam-Medaram section because it falls under the seismic zone 3. For the past decade or so, this region has been frequently jolted by earthquakes of magnitude 2-4. This is for the first time that a 5.3-magnitude quake took place after 1969,” he said.
