Telangana: Farmers suffer huge losses due to unseasonal rains across Khammam
Paddy, papaya plantations damaged at many places; electric poles broken in some places causing disruption in power supply
Khammam: Unseasonal rains that lashed several mandals in Khammam district in the past couple of days caused immense damage to farmers.
Paddy, which farmers had dried in the fields, got wet and papaya plantations were damaged at many places while electric poles were broken in some places causing disruption in power supply. Papaya plantations in Karepalli and Raghunadhapalem mandals were damaged due to the thunderstorms causing financial loss to farmers.
Paddy at Bachhod purchase centre in Tirumalayapalem mandal was soaked due to lack of tarpaulins. Farmers complained that paddy was not bought even 15 days after the stocks were brought to the purchase centre.
CPI (ML) New Democracy leader G Ramesh said that the farmers suffered losses due to the government’s negligence. The government should buy the soaked paddy, he demanded.
At Bokkala thanda in Karepalli mandal, five buffaloes died due to electric shock as six electric poles were uprooted due to strong winds on Thursday night. The cattle while grazing in the field came in contact with electric wires and died on Friday.
The Electricity Department officials were informed about the incident and were asked them to stop electricity supply. However, the officials did not stop the supply, complained a farmer, Hathiram.
The farmer alleged that his cattle died due to the negligence of the officials and said the cattle were worth around Rs 4 lakh. The villagers demanded the government to provide compensation to the farmer.
