Hyderabad: In a move aimed at curbing the menace of substance abuse and human trafficking among the youth, the Intermediate Education department is rolling out a comprehensive training and awareness campaign, focusing on prevention and education, across government junior colleges (GJCs).
As part of the initiative, the department is training around 500 GJCs lecturers who will lead the anti-drug activities on their respective campuses. The Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) and Telangana Anti-Narcotic Bureau (TGANB) officials will equip lecturers with the knowledge and tools required to identify early signs of drug use and ways to counsel students, creating drug-free campuses.
After a four-day residential training, commencing July 1, at MCR HRD Institute, these lecturers will not only educate students about the ill effects of drug abuse but also monitor and support students to prevent them from falling into hazardous habits.
“We sought from the HCSC for content material on anti-drug activities and TGANB Director Sandeep Shandilya will also be taking a session for the lecturers. The training will be done in two batches. The idea is to ensure colleges are drug-free besides ensuring a safe and supportive academic environment in all GJCs,” said S. Krishna Aditya, Director of Intermediate Education.
In addition to anti-drug awareness, the department, in partnership with Prajwala Foundation, has decided to raise awareness about human trafficking, particularly among intermediate students. The collaboration includes training of lecturers and student counsellors besides equipping them with necessary information to curb trafficking.
Further, this academic year, the department will be holding HELP (Heartfulness Experience Life’s Potential) in all GJCs for 16 weeks, starting next month. In collaboration with the Heartfulness Education Trust, the Board, with help of volunteers from the Trust, will hold training sessions on managing stress and anxiety from the beginning of the academic year.
The sessions cover how to build confidence and courage, besides handling fear, doubts, time management, rejuvenation, meditation, decision-making skills, and connecting with the inner self. This programme was launched just before the IPE 2025 examinations.
