Hyderabad: Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin of the Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the State government to submit full details of relief measures being taken in flood-hit districts. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on September 17.

The direction came during the hearing of an interim application filed by advocate Chikkudu Prabhakar in a public interest litigation (PIL) originally moved in 2020 by Dr Cheruku Sudhakar, alleging government inaction in implementing the National Disaster Management Act.

Prabhakar stated that over 30 cm of rainfall had been recorded in at least 10 districts, including Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, Rajanna Sircilla, and Nizamabad, affecting nearly 40 lakh people. He reported at least five deaths and said lakhs of families faced grave hardship due to inadequate preventive and relief measures.

Seeking urgent intervention, Prabhakar requested the Court to issue interim directions for strict implementation of Supreme Court and High Court guidelines on disaster management.

The Government Pleader submitted that the interim application was filed only in the morning and requested time to submit a detailed counter. He added that shelters had been opened in affected areas and that the administration was providing drinking water and nutritious food to those displaced.

The Bench directed the State to file a comprehensive counter detailing the steps taken and to highlight the main relief measures before the Court at the next hearing. However, the Court declined to pass interim directions at this stage.
